In women, mastitis means that her breast has become inflamed and there is a combination of swelling, tenderness, redness, and pain. Women aged from 18 to 50 are most commonly affected and usually mastitis is an acute condition that means it causes a short period of inflammation. In some cases women have chronic mastitis which lasts a long time. Most cases of mastitis happen in breastfeeding mothers although it can also take place in women who are not breastfeeding babies. It is sometimes caused by an infection spreading from another part of the body or if bacteria get into the breast through pierced or cracked nipples.
